What is leather squeezing?

Wet forming and leather lasting refer to techniques that utilize the property of vegetable-tanned leather known as "plasticity," which allows the leather to stretch when wet and maintain its shape when dried in that state. These methods enable the three-dimensional shaping of leather and are primarily used in the production of the upper part of leather shoes.
In recent years, bags have become less common, and we went through repeated trial and error until completion, but we were able to create a series inspired by the craft of traditional Japanese drums.

How to make a leather bag

Once the design is finalized, a wooden mold is created to achieve the ideal curves. This mold is a very important tool for shaping the bag, and in some cases, it may be revised and remade multiple times.

Next, the leather is cut into parts. The cutting is done slightly larger than the template to ensure that the leather stretches properly and fits perfectly to the template.

Before shaping the leather, it is soaked in water to soften it. After that, the leather is pressed firmly against a mold to shape it. In some cases, a combination of convex and concave molds is used to sandwich the leather, achieving an accurate shape. This step requires fine adjustments to ensure the thickness and position are precisely aligned.

After pressing, it will be dried for about 3 days. This drying process allows the leather to maintain its shape properly. Once the leather is dry, it is removed from the mold. Additionally, the inner parts are also dried over a few days.

Once the leather is completely dry, we can finally proceed to sewing. High-quality fabric is also used for the interior. The lightweight and durable material harmonizes with the outer leather, adding everyday usability to the premium design.
This entire production process is carried out carefully, one by one, combining handwork and traditional tools.

We deliver items that are crafted with care in every process, from the initial cut to the final stitch, ensuring pride in quality and design.

Why make wet forming leather bags?

Bags made using leather gathering and leather hanging techniques existed in ancient Europe, but they have almost disappeared now. This is because they are labor-intensive and time-consuming.

However, we believe that once a technology is lost, it cannot be regained, which is why we dare to challenge leather squeezing and leather hanging. Rather than letting techniques that are fading away due to the burden of time and effort be neglected, we aim to pass on the skills left by our predecessors to future generations by producing products that utilize these techniques.
