What are the techniques for squeezing and hanging leather?

Wet forming and leather lasting refer to techniques that utilize the property of vegetable-tanned leather known as "plasticity," which allows the leather to stretch when wet and maintain its shape when dried in that state. These methods enable the three-dimensional shaping of leather and are primarily used in the production of the upper part of leather shoes.

It is a technique that requires effort, time, and skill, but by using this technique, a unique charm is created that cannot be achieved through sewing.

Why do we make bags using squeezed and hung leather?

Bags made using leather gathering and leather hanging techniques existed in old Europe, but they have almost disappeared now. This is because they are labor-intensive and time-consuming.

However, we believe that once a technology is lost, it cannot be regained, which is why we dare to challenge leather squeezing and leather hanging. Rather than letting techniques that are fading away due to the burden of time and effort be neglected, we aim to pass on the skills left by our predecessors to future generations by producing products that utilize these techniques as a company.

HOW TO MAKE

How to make a bag using the leather squeezing and hanging techniques
Once the design is decided, a wooden mold is made.
Sometimes the mold needs to be remade multiple times to achieve the ideal curve.
Cut the leather.
The leather is cut to a size larger than the mold so that it can be stretched and fixed to fit the mold.

Wet the leather with water.

The leather is hammered onto the wooden mold, or placed into a convex mold and then pressed into the concave mold to secure it in place.
Let dry for about 3 days.
Allow to dry until the leather stretches and holds its shape.
Remove from the mold and allow to dry again.
1度革に形がついたら、木型から外し、Allow the inner leather to dry for another 3 days.

Once the leather is completely dry, it is removed from the mold and finally the sewing process begins.
